Lab Work Q&A

What is lab work?

Lab work consists of tests that analyze samples of your blood, urine, or saliva to diagnose underlying medical issues. Even if you feel healthy, it’s important to get lab work at least once a year.

Routine tests can alert you to potentially serious problems, like heart disease, when they’re most responsive to treatment.

What are some common types of lab work?

Care Clinic Plus offers various types of lab work, including:

Complete blood count (CBC)

A CBC measures your white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This test provides an easy way to identify certain disorders, like anemia and blood clots. CBCs can also pinpoint the cause of unusual symptoms, like bruising, weakness, and fatigue.

Basic metabolic panel (BMP)

A BMP measures the level of certain nutrients in your blood, like chloride, carbon dioxide, and potassium. Your provider at Care Clinic Plus uses this information to evaluate your electrolyte balance and kidney function.

Lipid panel

A lipid panel analyzes the number of fats (lipids) in your blood. Everyone has some lipids, but if your levels are higher than average, you might have an increased risk of heart disease.

Glycated hemoglobin (A1C)

A glycated hemoglobin test measures your average blood sugar over the last several months. If you receive a result of 6.7% or higher on two different tests, it means you have diabetes. There’s no cure for diabetes, but it’s possible to manage and prevent it from getting worse.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis analyzes a sample of your urine. Care Clinic Plus uses urinalysis to diagnose chronic medical conditions like diabetes and kidney disease.

Cultures

A culture is a lab test that screens for a viral or bacterial infection. To take a culture, your Care Clinic Plus provider collects a sample of saliva or mucus from your nose or the back of your throat.

How long does it take to get the results of my lab work?

Care Clinic Plus usually has the results of lab work within 24-72 hours, and sometimes sooner. After your provider receives the results, they call you and explain them over the phone. If necessary, they can prescribe medication or make other recommendations for treatment.
